Regular Yoga Workshops in Melbourne

At least once a month, Nina runs a longer workshop on a topic suggested by you. These workshops are usually on a Saturday afternoon and go for 2.5-3hrs.

Saturday Nov 25th 1.15pm: Hasta Bandha for Arm Balances

Due to high demand some of you will miss out on the Arm Balances and Inversions workshop. To make it up to you and still address the interest of those attending the first workshop, as well as following on from the Mula Bandha workshop… Here’s Hasta Bandha for Arm Balances. We’ll learn all about hasta bandha and its usefulness for arm balances, as well as how to keep our wrists and shoulders safe. We will explore all sorts of arm balances and inversions during this workshop. Whilst those poses challenge our perception of ourselves and often show up our limitations, they also bring great focus and commitment to your practice.

Planks of all kinds – they are difficult, daunting and at times dangerous. We’ll explore good alignment, look for grace and elaboarate techniques that keep the joints safe and strong.

Sat, July 1st 1:15pm: Lunge for the Psoas

Certainly not everybody’s favourite: lunges. Especially if you’re suffering from a tight or weak psoas. So here’s to having some fun with the pain and restriction that usually means we lose our yoga in our practice, start screwing up our faces and fall over.
We’ll be looing primarily at lunges, but also other one-sided, ‘front-back’, hip openers and how to strengthen and lengthen the psoas.

We’ll be looking at downward dog in depth, at its variations, at what is generally called the half vinyasa or vignette, and play with dogs! Commit to your breath in transitions; find approaches to a chaturanga practice; safe and comfortable in bhujangasana; jumping and stepping up/ through; comfortable and aware in adho mukha svanasana. … And I’m sure we’ll find many other aspects to examine 🙂

Sat, Nov 19th 1:15pm: Spinal Engagement Series: The Top – Chest, Shoulders, Neck

Following from our first session which focused on the base of the spine, we move up to the thoracic, shoulders and neck. What movements are possible and how can we engage them safely and fully? How do structures like head and arms relate into this region of the spine?
Expect to spruce up on anatomy, understand the weaknesses and strengths of the area and play with explorations 🙂

This series of workshops aims to assist you in reaching deeper into your practice and developing strong basic principles that allow you to confidently explore new aspects for growth.

Sat, Sept 13th basic breath for yoga

We will be looking at mechanics of breath from a western perspective and principles of pranic flow for the yogic understanding. How we breathe has a fundamental impact on our wellbeing, stamina and quality of decision making. For our practice, this implies that we can either get stressed out about challenges or remain calm and learn about better coping and growth experiences – taking us right up to an enhanced practice.  
 

Sun, Sept 14th inversion fundamentals

What does it take to get there? And once we’re there, how can we expand into the moment? We will examine which joints and muscle groups need to be open and strong to enable inversion practice, then learn how to go about preparing them. Once the mammoth task is clear, we can get to the nitty gritty of props and walls, helping each other, hand and finger engagement, alignment etc. Don’t eat chocolate on the day before the workshop!  
 

Sat, Sept 27th Walking the yogic path

Patanjali’s yoga sutras will feature heavily in this session, complemented by mind-clearing and meditative techniques. Not only will we discuss the 10 main precepts, but we will also look into facilitating yogic practices off the mat, outside the studio. I’m a big fan of moderation and facilitative approaches to what can be very hard, imposing and off-putting principles and practices. Let’s approach good intention with fun, joy and forgiveness when we falter!
